The Italian Peninsula, French island of Corsica, Tunisia and the Spanish Balearic Islands are some of the neighboring regions. The Strait of Bonifacio separates the island from Corsica .

Most of the island of Sardinia is mountainous, with the plain mostly in the coastal region. The highest peak Punta La Marmora in the Gennargentu mountain range is in the middle section of the island. Tirso, the biggest river has a distance of 151 km.

The coastal plains enjoy a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The temperatures in the mountains is lower and there is more rainfall.

After Sicily, Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is a part of Italy but enjoys regional autonomy.

Cagliari is the capital and largest city. The island has a population of more than 1.6 million.
